History of the Greater Washington Siberian Husky Club

The GWSHC was originally formed in the 1960s.  It was an active club and members included people who were well-known in the breeding and showing of the Siberian Husky.  The club disbanded in the 80s, leaving behind an attractive club logo and club property for possible future use.

A group of Siberian Husky enthusiasts met in August 1992 and determined that there was interest in re-forming the club.  The first meeting included several people involved in conformation, obedience, and just plain fun with Siberian Huskies.  Subsequently, members elected officers, ratified the club constitution, and planned club activities.  The original club logo now identifies this club.

The first GWSHC fun match took place in September, 1993, at the Northern Virginia Community College campus in Manassas, VA.  The first organized hike (Siberian Stroll) was held at Sky Meadows State Park in Paris, VA, in November, 1993.  The Hikers and Siberians had a great time that day, as seen below.

The objectives of our club are similar to the original club – to protect but not promote the Siberian Husky and to foster cooperation among Siberian owners – with the added goal of providing venues for Siberian pet owners to have fun with their dogs.

This non-AKC sanctioned version of the GWSHC has continued to the present (2006 at this writing) with a membership of approximately 20 people.  Club activities include:
            Conformation fun matches
            Obedience fun matches
            Rally obedience fun matches
Fun hikes in the greater Washington area
            Picnics
            Overnight camping
            Santa Delivery and Holiday Parades

In addition, club members participate in and support members involved in:
            Conformation Shows
            Obedience and Agility Trials
            Racing
            Working Pack Dog hikes
            Siberian Husky Rescue

Club meetings are open to everyone with an interest in Siberians.  We meet every other month.  Our meetings have been expanded this year to include Siberian or canine related programs.  2006 programs have included:
             Canine First Aid
             Rescue
            Ticks

On alternating months we host a club activity such as a fun match, hike, or picnic.
