January 2007
The following brag is from the Colorado Chapter of GWSHC, this race was the weekend of Jan 27-28
This past weekend was my first race of the season. It was a two day event, held at one of the
coldest spots in the state. The powers
that be were with us, as the 80% chance of snow and 20 MPH winds that the
forecasters promised never materialized.
On the first day, the light at 9 A.M. was pretty flat,
making it nearly impossible to see the trail for the the first teams out, those
with 8 dogs. (that is most assuredly NOT
me!!) Several came back with wide eyes,
after taking hellbent runs and more than one spill, or "biff", as I
first learned the term that day. This
was enough to make me worried about my own run, coming later in the day, with
only four dogs. To add to my
trepidation, it turned out that due to some last minute configuration changes,
my team was now going to include one of Mike's big, famous powerhouse wheel
dogs. Montana has not been feeling well lately, so
he was bumped down to my team. However,
even a less than optimum Montana
was still more pulling power than I've ever ridden behind.
By the time I went out near the end of the day, visibility
had improved remarkably. I was quite
cautious on my run, using the drag brake on all the hills, trying to keep the
wheel dogs from over-running the slower leaders. I had only run this course once before in my
life, at last year's race at this site, which had to be cancelled on the second
day due to whiteout conditions. Not
being familiar with the trail also added to my caution, but I finished the race
without biffing, second to last.
Day two dawned clear, calm, and cold. With a second night of freezing temps behind,
the trail was even faster for the racers.
I received a mind-boggling amount of technique advice, but determined to
give highest attention to that of my mentor, who went out in the 6 dog class
ahead of me, and at least has some understanding of my skill level and the
power of his own dogs. I was told I did
not need to be as cautious as I had been the day before, and that I had a
chance of beating the team ahead of me in the standings from the previous
day.
The racers are staggered in their starts by one minute
intervals. I took off, and actually
employed some of the techniques I've been aware of, but never had the
inclination or nerve to try. I crouched
down onto the runners on the flats and gradual downhills, and felt more
confident, knowing where and how extreme the curves were. Before I knew it, I was gaining on the guy
ahead of me, and knew I could indeed beat him.
I worked HARD, kicking a leg to help propel the sled, and caught him on
a long uphill. The teams pushed up the
hill side by side, but my sweet and friendly leader girl, Seeley, kept turning
around to catch sight of the other dogs.
Finally to get ahead of them, I got off and ran up the hill, pushing the
sled, dragging in great, open-mouthed lungfuls of air. At the top of the hill, I was home free, and
in sight of the finish line. We were pulling
ahead, the crowd was cheering, the dogs were heading home. Then we took a curve a little too fast and a
runner hit soft snow on the burm. Down I
went, and my competition sailed past. I
got up quickly and was gaining on him again, but the distance was short, and he
crossed the line ahead of us. The time I
spent in the snow lost me enough seconds to narrowly miss beating him.
It was a very crowd-pleasing and exciting finish for the
spectators. Even with my spill, I still
bettered my day one time by over two minutes, and managed to be "in the
$$$" for the purebred classes. This
was also my best-ever time at a race, breaking under 20 minutes for four miles,
a personal goal since I began this sport last year. And I figure I "biffed" with the
best of them!! So I went down because I
was truly racing for the first time, not just standing on the sled and going
around the course.
Lest anyone think I'm going to get rich at this, my winnings
amounted to $31.00. Since my entry fee
was $40.00, you can do the math--LOL!!
Another race this weekend, but I will have a slightly
different team, so the results are bound to be different as well.

with two handlers (Tom and me) so that he can be handled in a therapy
situation by either or both of us. As soon as all the paperwork
has gone through, Tom and Wolfie will be commencing regular, weekly
hospital visits at our local Veterans hospital. A shelter dog who
had himself been traumatized, we hope that Wolfie the therapy dog will
bring to others just a little of the happiness he's brought us.

- The following Brag is from Kim and Kayla:
On Sunday only we were entered in a NADAC (north america dog agility
council) trial. This venue has slightly different rules than AKC but we
do it a few times a year. We decided to enter Emma as a practice run to
see how she will do in AKC later this month. While she did not qualify
in her 2 runs, she was absolutely wonderful. There are no time faults
in NADAC in any class and she was just a second over time. Both her
runs were great and Kayla looks forward to running her again soon.
- Kaos got a first place and a Q in a class that doesn't do placements.
- Cowboy got a first place and Kayla and Emmet got a first and a third place.
- Congratulations
to Kayla and Emma. Emma's first AKC agility trial was this past Sunday.
Emma and Kayla qualified in Jumpers and placed fourth.

From the Agility Front ...
- Congratulations to Kim, Kayla and Kaos.
Kaos is ranked in the top twenty for Siberians in Agility at
number 18. This is the top 20 out of all Siberians competing in AKC
agility.
From the Nebraska KC Show ...
- Congratulations To Roberta and Ruby. Ruby was WB Sunday at the Nebraska KC Show in Omaha for a 4 point major!
August 2007
And from the Obedience Front ...
- On Saturday, Fire and Laurie traveled to
Berryville in the heat, to compete at the Blue Ridge Dog Training Clubs
all breed OBEDIENCE TRIALS, Competing against several "professional"
obedience handlers and teams: IN Advance Rally A with a score of
98, we won the class and brought home the blue!
And from the Agility Front ...
- On Saturday Kayla and Emma finished her
novice jumpers title with a second place! Not bad for a four year old
dog with limited agility training only since February!
- On Sunday Kim finished Cowboy's excellent standard title with a first place and 17 seconds under time!
And from the Conformation Front ...

his first two points by going WD at the Roanoke KC show on Saturday and

his third trial, Wolfie finished his Rally Novice title at the Somerset
KC show (Saturday), again taking first place in his class (score of 95).
- From Laurie: Today at the Warrenton Kennel
Club's agility trial Fire ran clean in Novice standard, earning his
very first AKC standard leg, and a First place! This was Fire's
first outdoor agility trial.
- From Kim: Kaos had a very awesome weekend.
He finished his novice FAST title on Sat. and got his first open FAST
leg on Sun. He also got a double Q on Sunday in the excellent classes
and a nice Q on Sat. too in jumpers. He earned a fair amount of Mach
points for him anyway in one weekend.
Cow also had a very nice Q in the FAST class also but it was definitely Kaos' weekend.
- Congratulations to Ron, Terri, Gale and Athos.
Athos won back to back majors over the weekend. He was WD BW On
Saturday at the Warrenton KC show for 3 points and W/D on Sunday at Old
Dominion for another 3 points.

Sunday while handling Paula Marcy's Huskavarna's Point of Grace. This
was only Franks fourth or fifth time in the show ring.
October 2007
- From
Kim: We just got home from a week of Aussie Nationals in N.J. Out
of three possible HIT juniors, Kayla won all 3 with Emmet in agility!
(with competition!) They earned several titles also. Cowboy and I
finished a title and got several legs towards others. Kayla also ran
Cow enough to earn his Elite jumpers title. All of our legs had
placements. Kayla also tried herding ducks with Becky's Savannah. They
did not qualify in that but it was quite an experience. Kayla wants to
stick with herding sheep.
- From Kim: I know I bragged about Kaos'
great weekend on Sept. 15 & 16, but I just found out that at the
Warrenton Kennel Club trial on 9/16, Kaos had earned his Masters
Excellent Jumpers title! You have to have 10 Q's for the title and I
didn't know he was that close. I guess he also wanted to make sure all
the aussie brags were done so he can throw in one of his own.
CSHC Calcutta Brags ...
- Congratulations to Ron, his team was 3rd in the
experienced class at Saturday's CSHC Calcutta .... and Sandrina
won the novice class at the Calcutta.

From the Middleburg, VA Shows ...
- Kim and Kayla report: Kayla and Emma did
get their first novice rally leg on Sunday! They got an 83, which is
really good considering neither one has done rally and we definitely
don't train for it.
- Kayla and Cowboy got his first advanced rally leg with a fourth place finish.
- Kayla who did a wonderful job of showing Kalli as a special on Sunday.
- Also a brag for Amanda from Sunday. She free
stacked herself and stood still to be examined. ( for those of you who
saw her at Old Dominion you know what an accomplishment that was).
From the National in CA ...
- Frank and Diane: Samba was third in 15-18 sweeps and made the cut in the 12-18 dog Class.
- Ron and Terri: Ron and Athos made the cut in the Bred By Exhibitor Class.
- Matt and Beth: Beth and Storm made the cut in Best of Breed.
November 2007
- From Kim: First, the Cow got a double Q on
Sat., which is always such a feat for him! I got a double Q with Kaos
on Sat. also and a Q in Ex. standard on Sun.
Now, Kayla and Emma Q'ed twice on Sat. w/ a 3rd and a 2nd. On
Sun. they Q'ed twice w/ a 2nd and a first, both perfect
scores!!! Keep in mind they started beginning agility
skills classes in Feb. of this year and she (and Kaos) just turned 5
last Monday!!!
Also, Gale came to watch some on Sat. and got to see Kaos and
Emma run. Since both Q'ed, I think she should show up more often as she
seems to be good luck!
From the Philly Specialty and the days before ...

Amorok's Lighten Up Kadian (Mandy) was W/B on three consecutive days

bred by class both days at the specialties and was Best Puppy in Sweeps

From the N.C. Shows ...
- Congratulations to Anne: Kerri was W/B BOS at the Monroe County show for an additional point.
December 2007
From the Oriole Dog Training Club Agility Trials ...
- From
Laurie: Fire qualified in novice standard and earned 1st place, and
then in novice jumpers at the end of a VERY long day, qualifed and
earned 3rd place!
- From Kim:
Our final agility brags for the year are: Kaos got another jumpers leg
on Sat. and another double Q on Sunday in the excellent classes. Kayla
and Emma finished their second AKC agility title this year with a
perfect score and a first place. Since we arrived late, Kayla didn't
even get a chance to walk the course and had to run it with just
watching others run before her. So Emma is now CH Kadians Just Friends
NA NAJ. They are looking forward to more titles next year!
From the Cleveland, OH Shows ...
- Congratulations to Frank, Diane and Cleo, who
took WB for a 3-point major on Saturday ... They also deserve a brag
for surviving the drive back from Cleveland on Sunday in that blizzard.

finished his UKC Championship at the UKC shows in Warrenton, VA this
